As the Trumpist collective descends in celebratory fashion on the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Oxon Hill, Maryland this week, there is, and most unfortunately, in our nation this perception that party affiliation prevents acceptance and advocacy of common truth absolutely. Of course, there are many instances where such obtusity is indeed the case but not in all cases. Those of us of the so-called “left-leaning” ideology are particularly guilty of this. In light of this truth, it should be well-noted that there are plenty of dyed-in-the-wool and staunch conservatives who have spoken out consistently, passionately and, in many cases, ferociously against the current administration.
And it’s also important to note that they do so not for their personal dislike of Donald Trump; they do so because the domestic and global political stratagems coming from the White House are dangerous. It shouldn’t be lost on any of us the risk that these Americans are taking, which in many ways is far greater than that of a democrat or progressive. When the aforementioned speak out against Trump it’s expected, but when a republican does it, well, it is anything but. These duly monikered heroes are going against their own party, placing their careers, reputation and their personal safety at risk. These individuals should be applauded for their commitment to common sense and truth and their unconventional stance taken as a sign that conversations with those we have ideological differnces should be actively pursued and not dismissed out of hand.
